ELEPHANTINE ISLAND
Known to the Ancient Egyptians as Abu or Yebu, Elephantine stands at the border between Egypt and Nubia. The island was an excellent defensive site for a city and its location made it a natural transshipping point for river trade. According to Egyptian mythology, here was the dwelling place of Khnum, the ram-headed god of the cataracts, who controlled the waters of the Nile from caves beneath the island: he was worshipped here as part of a triad comprising him, his wife Satis, and their daughter Anuket. There are records of a temple to Khnum here as early as the third dynasty, and most of the southern tip of the island is taken up by the ruins of the later temple to him that was completely rebuilt in the Late Period (30th dynasty).
In 1912, an old rest house on the southern tip of Elephantine Island was converted into a museum. Expanded in the 1990s, the museum boasts a collection that focuses on the history of Aswan and Nubia. The displays include mummies, weapons, pottery, utensils, and statues. Outdoors, a garden leads into the ruins of Abu, the pharaonic settlement on the island..
BOTANICAL GARDENS ON KITCHENER'S ISLAND
The island was given to Lord Kitchener as a thank-you for his services in the Sudan Campaign (1896-1898). Kitchener rapidly transformed the small island into a paradise of exotic trees and plants and carefully planned walkways. It later passed into the property of the Egyptian government and was used as a research station for examining different food and cash crops.
TOMBS OF THE NOBLES (Qubbet el Hawa meaning Dome of the Winds)
Set in high cliffs overlooking the Nile it's quite a hike up the staircases to the tombs
but worth the effort. The elite Tombs date mainly from the Old Kingdom which provide an insight into the burial traditions of Upper Egyptian Nome 1 during the later Old Kingdom. The tombs include the famous tomb of Harkhuf. Others belong to Sabni or Heqaib. There are later tombs, from the Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom.
